Trump Proposes Rubio as Cuba's Next Leader
The U.S. president amplified an image on X Sunday that mockingly suggested America's top diplomat should assume control of the Caribbean nation. Responding via Truth Social, Trump declared, "Sounds good to me!"
Trump subsequently accused Havana of economic dependence on Venezuelan petroleum revenues. Last week, U.S. special operations forces abducted Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro following sustained diplomatic pressure from Washington. The operation resulted in multiple Cuban fatalities among Maduro's protective detail, after which Trump demanded unfettered access to Venezuela's oil reserves.
Confirming the casualties on Truth Social, Trump stated that "most of those Cubans are DEAD" and announced American "protection" of Venezuela. He issued an ultimatum to Cuba's government: "make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE."
Within hours, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel fired back on X, rejecting Washington's perceived moral high ground and charging America with "attacking" his nation for 66 years.
"Those who turn everything into a business, even human lives, have no moral authority to point fingers at Cuba on anything, absolutely anything," Diaz-Canel wrote.
The Cuban leader attributed his country's "severe economic shortages" to "the draconian measures of extreme strangulation that the US has been applying to us for six decades."
Washington imposed its sweeping trade blockade against Cuba during the 1960s. Though the Obama and Biden administrations pursued diplomatic thaw, Trump restored Cuba to the state terrorism sponsor list upon returning to office this January.
