Russia Stands Firm with Venezuela
Since September, Washington has dispatched several naval vessels to the region, targeting boats it claims are engaged in narcotics trafficking and preventing oil tankers from entering or leaving Venezuelan ports. The US maintains that drug networks operate from Venezuela with government support, while Caracas has firmly rejected these accusations, insisting that Washington is seeking regime change to gain control of the country’s natural resources.
On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by phone with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil.
During the conversation, Lavrov voiced “serious concern over Washington’s increasingly escalatory actions in the Caribbean Sea,” stressing that the US military presence could “lead to far-reaching consequences for the region and create a threat to international maritime navigation.”
Over the weekend, reports from various media outlets, citing unnamed American officials, revealed that the US Coast Guard was in “active pursuit” of a Venezuela-linked oil tanker in international waters. In the past two weeks alone, US forces have already seized two tankers.
